Which Course Expo 2010 has a very practical ethos; we take a 'hands-on' approach when it comes to adult learning. Surveys and feedback from the public reveal just how much they appreciate practical demonstrations of adult education, so it is no surprise that seminars by exhibiting course providers are among the most popular features of successive Which Course Expos. Located in a prominent area, they capture the attention of all visitors to the Expo and routinely attract large crowds of interested adult learners.

This year will be no different, and we have three seminar-providers lined up already. The following are brief descriptions of what they have planned:

PCI College - Saturday, August 28th at 12pm

Initially providing design fundamentals in IT and design techniques, DID train the individual to develop a transferable skill-set to enable them to pursue a choice career paths.

The seminar will cover techniques the college employs to enable the student to develop their skills, such as creativity, drawing techniques, presentation, portfolio development, problem solving, and responding creatively and functionally to a client brief. IPASS (Irish Payroll Association) - Saturday, August 28th at 4pm
Presenting a seminar entitled The Role of the Payroll Professional Today, Eamonn Corcoran, Chief executive of the Irish Payroll Association will outline the opportunities and the career prospects which exist in payroll and the steps to follow for anyone who wishes to pursue a career in payroll or who wishes to enhance their career prospects, whether they come from a Payroll, HR, Finance or general management background.

Payroll is a vital function in every company, yet the vast majority of payroll personnel have no formal Payroll Qualifications.

The operation of payroll includes the management of a company’s PAYE, PRSI, Income Levy and Health Levy liabilities (and Pension levy liability in the public sector). Yet amazingly, since less than 10% of all payroll personnel are hold professional payroll qualifications, the vast majority of employers leave the management of their biggest tax liabilities in the hands of untrained, unqualified staff with little or no support. In most companies, the PAYE/PRSI and Levy liabilities far exceed their combined VAT and Corporation Tax liabilities.

Working in payroll is a varied, challenging and demanding career, but one that brings enormous job satisfaction and little by little the role of payroll professionals is gaining the respect and the recognition that it truly deserves. Dealing with ever changing Revenue, Social Welfare and Employment Law legislation, working to strict deadlines, being proficient in the use IT and dealing with a myriad of queries from employees and management alike, means that the role of payroll personnel is a highly demanding one, whether operating as a 1 man payroll department, or as a member of a payroll team in a large multinational.
